History of Fat City Bar & Cafe
The Fat City building was originally built around 1849 by Samuel Brannan as a general merchandise store. According to sources, this building was the first store to be established after the City of
Sacramento was laid out. In 1851, the land and building had the highest assessed valuation in the city. The building came into the possession of Henderson, Brown and Company, a general mercantile store, during the 1890s. As part of one of the largest restoration projects in the United States (Old Sacramento), the Fat Family restored the exterior of the building to its original 1849 appearance.
Because of its historic location, it was fitting for the Fat Family to create the corner location as the town's social and information center, as an informal gathering place and drinking spot, and as a daily eating place for the travelers and visitors, as well as for the local citizens and merchants. The Fat Family has created Fat City as a Turn of the Century Bar and Cafe filled with such unusual artifacts as the Legendary Pioneer Bar (circa 1876 Leadville, Colorado, Home of the Unsinkable Molly Brown), the Famous Purple Lady (circa 1893 Chicago World's Fair, First Prize, Stained Glass), stained and beveled glass windows and many old Tiffany type lamps.
